Who is the SBI?
The SBI is a voluntary association with members which include:
- Social landlords – housing association and housing co-operatives - who are looking for ways to improve the quality of life for their tenants.
- Private owner/occupiers who are working to build a sense of community round their backcourt.
- Environmental organisations and projects which are eager to work for both social and environmental benefits.
The original members of the SBI who first set the ball rolling in 2004 were:
- Gibson Street, Westbank Quadrant & Otago Street Residents Association – aka the GOW Triangle Community

- Partick Housing Association
- Tollcross Housing Association
Tollcross HA has since left the SBI management committee, but the representative from the other four organisations are continuing to work for the backcourts of Glasgow. The Management Committee meets every 2 months, and its main role is to oversee the delivery of existing projects and plan for the future.
The current management committee is:
- Derek Dunsire – Kelvin Clyde Greenspace – Chair
- Jane McBride – Shettleston Housing Association – Treasurer
- Bill Waller – Partick Housing Association – Secretary
- Eric Kay – GOW Triangle Community – Committee Member
- Margaret Burke – Partick Housing Association – Committee Member
Other organisations also attend committee meetings and have worked closely with the SBI in the past – Community Recycling Network Scotland, Glasgow City Council Environmental Protection Services, Scottish Waste Action Group.
